Crossed glances
Following my experience in the souk of Izmir, the idea of portraying homeless people in the extreme cold of Montreal became obvious.
It was a very moving experience, as I had to make contact to offer them the opportunity to serve as a model in exchange for financial compensation, $10. I now regret the small amount.
I create my portraits on my iPad using photos taken with my phone. The session lasts only two minutes; I prefer a natural, unposed look. I guarantee their anonymity and the confidentiality of the photos.
On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day, in temperatures ranging from -15°C to -20°C, I set out. The journey led to some very moving encounters. I imagine that, like most people, I pass by these street dwellers with a certain degree of avoidance. For this project, I had to make contact, and contact I did. With some more than others, but while taking the photos, there were exchanges of glances, two human beings communicating.
I share these glimpses with you, a window into their inner selves, their souls. In this way, I pay tribute to these people who have lived and continue to live through enormous hardships. They stand tall despite the polar cold that engulfs the city.
